Mom badgered me the rest of the weekend, wanting to know why Aaron had left so suddenly. All I could tell her was he had to go.

I dreaded seeing him on Monday. I wasn’t sure exactly how I was going to handle our fight. He just respected my wishes and broke his promise to me, and that was really hard for me to overlook. Tabitha had tried talking to me about the incident, but I didn’t want to hear it. She had agreed that he shouldn’t have done the prom-posal, but she wasn’t as angry as I expected her to be on my behalf. She hinted that he had been pressured into it, but I didn’t care.

I was coming outside to let him off the hook. To let him ask Robin. And instead I got roped into a stupid public prom-posal.

I typically didn’t see Aaron until lunchtime, so my Monday morning was pretty typical. It was only as we got nearer to lunch that I started stressing about the upcoming confrontation. I knew I had to have it, but I wasn’t ready. So instead of going to the cafeteria, I went to a vending machine, grabbed a drink and a protein bar and went to the editing room. I’d hide out here today and give myself just a little longer to process what I was feeling. Tomorrow, I promised myself, I would go to lunch and confront Aaron.

Once again, he took my choice away.

“If anyone should avoid the lunch table, it should be me,” he said from the doorway of the editing room. “It was your table first.”

I inhaled a deep breath and slowly blew it out before facing him. “I just wanted a little space before we talked.”

I expected him to walk into the room and take the empty seat next to me. Instead, he stayed where he was and said, “if you want me to go away and give you some time, I will. I just wanted to apologize for breaking my promise to you.”

I didn’t know what to say. I hadn’t expected him to apologize or admit any wrongdoing. When I didn’t answer immediately, he said, “We can talk tomorrow if you’re ready.”

It seemed stupid and cowardly to delay what needed to be said when we had the perfect opportunity right now. In private.

“Have a seat,” I motioned to the chair next to me.

He slowly entered, as if any sudden movement would scare me away. “Thanks,” he said, and we sat in silence for another moment.

It was awkward and uncomfortable, but I appreciated his willingness to ease into the conversation. “You really took me by surprise yesterday. I thought you were interested in Robin, and I was trying to be a good friend.”

He frowned at me and leaned forward, resting his forearms on his knees. “What made you think I was interested in Robin?”

I shrugged. “She came to your game. She joined the team for pizza. It just seemed to add up.”

“Your math gave you the wrong answer.
