Mom badgered me the rest of the weekend, wanting to know why Aaron had left so suddenly. All I could tell her was he had to go.
I dreaded seeing him on Monday. I wasnât sure exactly how I was going to handle our fight. He just respected my wishes and broke his promise to me, and that was really hard for me to overlook. Tabitha had tried talking to me about the incident, but I didnât want to hear it. She had agreed that he shouldnât have done the prom-posal, but she wasnât as angry as I expected her to be on my behalf. She hinted that he had been pressured into it, but I didnât care.
I was coming outside to let him off the hook. To let him ask Robin. And instead I got roped into a stupid public prom-posal.
I typically didnât see Aaron until lunchtime, so my Monday morning was pretty typical. It was only as we got nearer to lunch that I started stressing about the upcoming confrontation. I knew I had to have it, but I wasnât ready. So instead of going to the cafeteria, I went to a vending machine, grabbed a drink and a protein bar and went to the editing room. Iâd hide out here today and give myself just a little longer to process what I was feeling. Tomorrow, I promised myself, I would go to lunch and confront Aaron.
Once again, he took my choice away.
âIf anyone should avoid the lunch table, it should be me,â he said from the doorway of the editing room. âIt was your table first.â
I inhaled a deep breath and slowly blew it out before facing him. âI just wanted a little space before we talked.â
I expected him to walk into the room and take the empty seat next to me. Instead, he stayed where he was and said, âif you want me to go away and give you some time, I will. I just wanted to apologize for breaking my promise to you.â
I didnât know what to say. I hadnât expected him to apologize or admit any wrongdoing. When I didnât answer immediately, he said, âWe can talk tomorrow if youâre ready.â
It seemed stupid and cowardly to delay what needed to be said when we had the perfect opportunity right now. In private.
âHave a seat,â I motioned to the chair next to me.
He slowly entered, as if any sudden movement would scare me away. âThanks,â he said, and we sat in silence for another moment.
It was awkward and uncomfortable, but I appreciated his willingness to ease into the conversation. âYou really took me by surprise yesterday. I thought you were interested in Robin, and I was trying to be a good friend.â
He frowned at me and leaned forward, resting his forearms on his knees. âWhat made you think I was interested in Robin?â
I shrugged. âShe came to your game. She joined the team for pizza. It just seemed to add up.â
âYour math gave you the wrong answer.
